A woman in her 20s was left seriously injured this morning after she was pinned from her waist down beneath a truck on a rural road in the Nhlazatshe area near Edendale, Pietermaritzburg.
ER24 paramedics, along with rescue services, responded to the scene to find a large tipper truck lying on its side in the middle of the road. The cargo of sand had been spilled across the road.
When paramedics approached the truck, they a found a female patient lying trapped, from the waist down, beneath the cab of the vehicle.
Assessments showed that the woman, who was also heavily pregnant, had sustained severe crush injuries to both of her legs.
Rescue services had to use specialised equipment, including a Backhoe, to free the patient in an operation that lasted one and a half hours.
Once freed, the patient was treated and provided with advanced life support interventions before she was transported to Edendale Hosptal for urgent medical treatment.
The cause of the incident is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
