The Nyanga Policing Precinct have apprehended over than 400 people. The arrests were made during various operations conducted by the six Cluster Stations, consisting of Bishop Lavis, Elsies River, Guguletu, Manenberg, Nyanga and Philippi East.
The arrests and successes achieved during the operations are as follow:
•162 suspects were apprehended during searches conducted at 65 drug houses as well as during vehicle check points (VCP’s), stop-and- searches and road blocks.
•49 shebeen operations conducted led to 15 people arrested for dealing in liquor without licenses and 638.46 litres of liquor confiscated.
•Five tracing operations were conducted and 18 wanted suspects arrested.
•36 suspects were apprehended for crimes committed against women and children.
•16 stolen vehicles were also recovered, three in Bishop Lavis, eight in Guguletu and five in Philippi East.
•1105 spaza shops visits were conducted, 09 at second hand goods shops and 52 Vehicle Control Points.
•Seven fines valued R6 300 were issued and seven arrests made.
•Some suspects were apprehended for cases ranging from murder, assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH), attempted murders, robbery, possession of stolen property and other various cases.
The following were also confiscated:
• 174 units of tik
• 156.5 mandrax tablets
• 1052g of dagga
• 2g of heroine
Five firearms were also confiscated and eight suspects apprehended for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Four firearms were confiscated in Elsies River; three in Philippi East and one in Nyanga.
These successes were through member’s vigilance and concerted efforts made as well information shared by responsible community members.
Some suspects appeared in different courts during the week but most of them will appear in different Magistrate Courts on Monday, 07 September 2015 for various charges.
