49 Western Cape beaches received international Blue Flag Status
As a major achievement by municipalities in the Western Cape, 49 beaches, marinas and boats received the international Blue Flag Status. In total 84 Blue Flags were given to South Africa of which more than half were in the Western Cape.
The Blue Flag is an international award given to beaches that meets strict criteria of excellence in the areas of safety, amenities, cleanliness and environmental standards.
The DA in the Western Cape wishes to congratulate all of the winners, especially Grotto Beach in Hermanus who won the Gold Status this year.
Western Cape beaches that received Silver Status are Clifton’s 4th Beach, Bikini Beach in Gordonsbay, Kleinmond, Hawston and Lappiesbaai (Stilbaai). Bronze Status were given to Silwerstroomstrand, Camps Bay, Llandudno, Muizenberg, Mnandi, Witsand, Santos (Mossel Bay), Hartenbos, Robberg 5 and Keurboomstrand.
The Blue Flag Status is important for promoting tourism, boosting the economic growth and contributing to permanent job creation in the province. However, one of the most importantly attributes is the creating of proud citizens and an overall awareness of the importance of the environmental and the preservation thereof.
