Maserati Cape Town Race Week in glorious weather

December 15, 2015 • News, Sea, Transport

The inaugural Maserati  Cape Town Race Week reached the midway point yesterday after a weekend of glorious weather and shifting winds, that challenged all crews and brought out the very best in technical yacht racing. The predominantly Westerly wind meant the officials sent the fleet out towards Cape Town Stadium for the racing on Saturday, and this meant that the thousands of spectators that streamed to the area for the Cape Town 7’s Rugby tournament were treated to the sight of the country’s fast yachts racing just off the Atlantic seaboard.

On Saturday evening, Maserati VIP’s, boat owners, local celebrities and distinguished guests enjoyed the Maserati Cape Town Race Week Charity Gala Evening, at the luxury 5-star One and Only Hotel. The host was TV presenter  Katlego Maboe. All proceeds of the auction go to the RCYC Sailing Academy and The Ripple Effect, an organisation that is raising funds and awareness for coastal conservation in the Western Cape.

Blue skies and sunshine greeted the fleet on Sunday. Out on the course, there was no shortage of drama and close racing between all classes resulted in just seconds separating the leading crews. The media and VIP boats were treated to the sight of South Africa’s top sailors battling in increasing winds. With only one race on Sunday, Rob Wilcox, the regatta’s race offcier, sent the fleet off on a medium distance course that saw over 250 sailors race along the Western Coastline of Table Bay, as far as Koeberg.

The evenings at Royal Cape Yacht Club have been buzzing with activity. From live music, daily prize giving, with each class leader taking home the daily ‘battle flag’ to fly from their forestays the following day, as well as a bottle of Johnny Walker Gold Reserve Whisky, to Maserati displays of the latest Masearti Ghibli, the regatta is truly pulling people from all over Cape Town down to the Royal Cape Yacht Club.. Apparel suppliers Helly Hansen have also added to the festivities with their latest ranges available from their Royal Cape Yacht Club ‘pop-up store’.

Racing continues until Wednesday the 16th December with a social twilight race on Tuesday evening, and the final days racing on Wednesday. Anyone one interested in coming down to Royal Cape Yacht Club is welcomed to and should contact regatta organisers.
