Driver arrested after crash with car transporting abalone illegally

Visible Policing members attached to Ladismith SAPS attended an accident scene between Barrydale and Ladismith yesterday, 19 January 2016 at about 14:15, approximately 2km from Ladismith when they discovered abalone to the estimated value of about R400 000.000 in the car involved in the accident.

The 1459 units of abalone was confiscated and handed over to officials of Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) for further disposal.

The 37-year-old driver was arrested on the scene and is currently detained at the Ladismith police holding cells pending further investigation. He will be charged for the illegal possession of Abalone and will appear in the Ladismith magistrates’ court.

The Acting Western Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lt Genl. Gary Kruser and the Western Cape police management have commended these members involved for their dedication and reiterated their commitment to create a safer environment for all inhabitants of the Western Cape. He again emphasised the importance of an integrated and intelligence-driven crime combating process that will be continued to rid our communities from the scourge crime.
