Woman killed, 18 injured in taxi collision

February 15, 2016 • Accidents, Car

An elderly woman was killed and 18 others injured, including children, after a taxi and transporter collided at the Randfontein and Corlett Road intersection in Witpoortjie, West of Johannesburg.

When ER24 paramedics, along with other services, arrived on scene, they found both wrecked vehicles on the side of the road. The taxi was found lying on its side.

On inspection, paramedics discovered the body of an elderly woman lying next to the taxi. Unfortunately the woman had already succumbed to her multiple fatal injuries.

It is believed the woman lay trapped beneath the taxi, which had been pushed the right way up by members of the community.

18 other patients were found on scene, their injuries ranging from minor to critical. Some of the patients were children aged between 4 and 7.

Paramedics treated the patients and provided them with advanced life support interventions.

Once treated, two critically injured patients were airlifted to nearby hospitals for further treatment, one by the ER24 Helicopter and another by a private service.

The remaining patients were treated for their injuries and thereafter transported to various hospitals for further treatment.

The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
