Transport Minister welcomes SA ’s reappointment as chair of the UN’s ICAO Aviation Security Panel

Minister of Transport Ms. Dipuo Peters has welcomed South Africa’s reappointment to chair the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Security Panel for the second time. This appointment was confirmed at a week-long ICAO AvSec panel session in Montreal, Canada which took place from 14 to 18 March 2016.

The appointment is with effect from 14 March 2016.

South Africa was represented by the Chief Executive Officer of the South African Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Ms Poppy Khoza. The country was initially appointed as chair in 2015, making Ms Khoza the first woman to take up such a key and strategic position in international civil aviation.

“Through this appointment, the global community has once again demonstrated their trust and faith in South Africa’s capabilities on aviation matters”, says Minister Peters.
ICAO is a specialised agency of the United Nations tasked with the development of aviation issues.

The Security Panel of the ICAO is tasked with enhancing civil aviation security across the world by, among others, developing and coordinating an effective global policy and legal framework in response to the evolving threat to civil aviation.

Minister Peters says that achievements such as this one move South Africa closer to realising the vision of being rated amongst the top 10 civil aviation authorities in the world by 2020.
