Deputy Transport Minister to Deliver Second D.C.O Matiwane Memorial Lecture

As part of Youth Month, the Deputy Minister of Transport Ms Sindisiwe Chikunga will honour the late struggle stalward David Cecil Oxford Matiwane by delivering a Second D.C.O Matiwane Memorial Lecture at Msunduzi Museum in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal Province on Friday, 10 June 2016.

D.C.O Matiwane Memorial Lecture is an annual event aimed at honouring Matiwane who was a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and the South African Communist Party (SACP).

He was jailed several times by the apartheid government for fighting against the system which discriminated against Black people.

Amongst other things, Matiwane was known for defying the apartheid regime by carrying placards and distributing pamphlets marking the fourth anniversary of the 1976 Soweto uprising which at that time was not allowed.

The Deputy Minister will be joined by Dr Bongani Ndhlovu from Iziko Musuems of South Africa and a research fellow at the Centre for Humanities Research, University of the Western Cape who will deliver a reflective speech on the struggle hero.

The event has been organised by the National Department of Transport in partnership with the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Arts and Culture, Msunduzi Local Municipality, D.C.O Matiwane Memorial Project, Msunduzi Musuem and Old Prison Museum.
