ICAO Secretary General visits ATNS

The Secretary General of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Dr. Fang Liu is on an official visit to South Africa.

This is the first official visit by a top ICAO representative since South Africa became a member of the world’s civil aviation administration body in 1944.

Dr. Liu earlier met with the Minister of Transport, Ms Dipuo Peters, as well as the management of the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA), Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) and various civil aviation structures and associations.

Yesterday Dr. Liu, accompanied by ICAO Regional Director – Eastern and Southern Africa Mr Barry Kashambo and SA representative at ICAO Council, Mr Tshepo Peege, visited Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) Aviation Training Academy (ATA).

Taken through a tour of the ATA, Dr. Liu expressed satisfaction at the advanced high-technology training equipment deployed at the facility. She mentioned that “proper training in aviation safety and security” were paramount in ensuring global passenger safety

Welcoming Dr. Liu and her entourage, ATNS Executive Mr. Peter Marais said ATNS was working with other regional Air Navigation Service Providers find a way of sharing infrastructure “without compromising aviation security”.

Dr. Liu’s visit ends today.
