Pretoria-The Department of Transport will host the country’s first Aviation Youth Summit as a build up to the International Civil Aviation Day (ICAD) celebrations on Wednesday, 07 December 2016 at the Dube Trade Port in La Mercy, KwaZulu-Natal.
The aim of the summit is to open dialogue between Government and the youth regarding meaningful participation of young South Africans in the aviation and aerospace industry. The dialogue will focus on how young entrepreneurs can overcome challenges, especially those relating to access to skills development as well as career and business opportunities in the aviation and aerospace sector.
This will be followed by the main commemoration of ICAD event which will take place in a form of an air show on Saturday, 10 December 2016 at the Margate Airport.
On this day, spectators will be treated to sensational aerobatics and get to witness true “art in the sky” when military, civilian, and police pilots push various types of aircraft to the pinnacles of their performances. In addition, over 600 school learners will be introduced to various careers in aviation when they interact with aviators and exhibitors.
The Deputy Minister of Transport Ms Sindisiwe Chikunga will deliver the keynote address during the ICAD celebrations. ICAD is officially recognised by the United Nations and is observed annually on 07 December to raise awareness regarding the importance of international civil aviation as well as the role that the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) plays in international air transport. ICAO is a United Nations body responsible for developing global standards for aviation safety and security.
The Deputy Minister will be joined by the leadership of the KwaZulu-Natal provincial government, aviation stakeholders, members of the community and school learners.
