Fatal crash on the N17 East under the R23 bridge, Brakpan
At 11:15 this morning Emer-G-Med paramedics responded to reports of a serious collision on the N17 East under the R23 bridge, close to Carnival City, in Brakpan – east of Johannesburg.
It’s alleged that the driver of the car lost control of his vehicle, veered off the highway and collided with a bridge.
On arrival paramedics found that a mother had sustained fatal injuries, a child had been ejected from the vehicle and also showed no signs of life – both patients were declared dead on the scene.
Two others, a dad and a second child, sustained very critical injuries and all required rapid Advanced Life Support interventions. The Netcare911 Aeromedical Helicopter was called to the scene, to airlift the critically injured father. Unfortunately, before the helicopter’s arrival, the adult male deteriorated rapidly and went into cardiac arrest. Paramedics immediately initiated CPR and performed a full Advanced Life Support resuscitation, they successfully managed to get a pulse back.
Once stabilised both critically injured patients, which were placed on full life support, were rushed to various nearby specialist trauma centres for further stabilisation.
The Ekhuruleni Metropolitan Police Department’s specialist Accident Investigation Unit were at the scene to determine the exact events leading up to the horror collision.
