KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda has condemned the killing of three people in Mfume, south of Durban over the weekend.
One of the people who was killed is, Nqobizwe Mkhize, who was an election coordinator for the ANC in the area. It is alleged that Mkhize was gunned down in the early hours of yesterday morning at his home by unknown gunmen. When fleeing the scene, the suspects fatally shot another two community members.
Kaunda has asked the police to speed up the investigation into the incident to ensure that those who are implicated face the full might of the law. “Of major concern is that this incident occurred on the eve of the voter registration and Mkhize was an election coordinator in the area,” said Kaunda.
He called for calm in the area and urged community members to cooperate with the police as they work flat out to apprehend suspects and to establish the motive behind the killings. Although Mfume is one of the areas that are stable in the province, Kaunda has assured the community of heightened police visibility to ensure that such incidents do not recur.
