Completion of infrastructure projects in Umzimkhulu – the Gungununu River vehicle bridge
The Gungununu River Vehicle Bridge located in the UMzimkhulu Local Municipality links communities of Kayeka, Mtantshahlolo, Goso, Elukhasini and Elucingweni.
It also serves as an access to the public amenities such as Ntsikeni Police Station, Centocow Hospital, Mabandla High School, St. Patrick Junior Secondary School, Mabandla Mobile clinic, MaKheswa Tuckshop, Mnguni Tuckshop, Mabandla Traditional Council, Bomvini Pension Paypoint, St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Goso, Elukhasini Primary School, Angelican Church as well as the Damascas ZCC.
The bridge was constructed over the Gungununu River in the Kayeka area, on the Goso Access Road, which is linked to D634. It is a multiple box culvert bridge in design.
It is approximately 2.5 metres above stream level and is capable of clearing the 1:20 year flood return period. There is a single lane carriage way with a dedicated demarcated pedestrian walkway. The total cost of the bridge construction was R23.89 million.
Sixty Two (62) job opportunities were created during the construction of the Gungununu River Vehicle Bridge for local community members.
