5 February 2019: Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS), in partnership with Airports Company South Africa (ACSA), officially launched the Educator and Learner Development Programme at the Dondashe Secondary School in Centane – Eastern Cape.
The event was attended by the ATNS/ACSA Corporate Social Investment and Socio-Economic Development Units, Amathole District Education Officials, Dondashe Secondary School Management Team, learners and their parents.
The Programme, started last year, is run by specialists in Mathematics, Science and Accounting subjects. Its aim is to offer professional support to teachers and to improve learner performance in Mathematics, Science and Accounting subjects. Educators are supported through the sharing of subject content knowledge, teaching methodologies, lesson preparation and management to mention but a few. Educators are also provided with teaching material that makes the task of training easier and simpler to understand.
Learners are also provided with additional weekend and school holiday classes.
The ATNS/ACSA partnership is not limited to the Teacher and Learner Development Programme. Other joint initiatives include the sponsorship of the refurbishment of schools’ infrastructure, supply of fully-equipped ICT and Science laboratories – across the length and breadth of the country.

As part of the National Department of Transport’s Aviation Transformation Agenda, the top nine performing 2018 Dondashe Secondary learners, who were Grades 10 to 12 classes, will be part of a group of twenty-seven (27) learners from rural Eastern Cape, who will be participating in the Gauteng Province Aviation Career Development Tour in mid-February. Learners will be exposed to real aviation sites, such as Air Traffic and Airspace Management facilities, Aviation Training Academies and massive international airport infrastructure. The main objective is expose this learners to over a hundred career opportunities available within the aviation industry.
Their experiences will be documented and shared with all other stakeholders within the education sector in their home province.
