Upgrade of main road P36-2 in Umzinyathi District Municipality
P36-2 is located in the Nquthu area and is the link between Nquthu and Nondweni. It falls under the Nquthu Local Municipality. Ladysmith Local Municipality. This road serves the Magongoloza, Maduladula, Nondweni and Mhlungwane communities, Vezinhlanhla Primary, Mdonswa High, Maduladula Primary, Hlubi High, Nondweni Primary, Langazeni High, Ekehhanyeni Primary, Mhayise High and Nomashaka Primary Schools, Nondweni Clinic and Nondweni Police Station.
The project entails the upgrade of Main Road P36-2 between Nquthu and Nondweni. The total length of this road is approximately 23 kilometres. The KZN Department of Transport has completed 20.5 kilometres of the road, upgraded to blacktop surface and 5 drainage structures to date. The remaining 2.5 kilometres and 3 drainage structures are to be completed in this 2019/20 financial year. Construction works for KM 20 to 23 commenced in May 2018 and is scheduled to be completed by August 2019. The total estimated cost of the project is R234 million with R161 million having been spent to date.
The project has created economic opportunities for the community and various service providers. It is anticipated that the project will be completed within the contract period and within budget. The local community will be the main beneficiaries of this project with increased access to schools, clinics and other services.
