Main Road P700 is located from Ulundi to Empangeni, falling within the jurisdiction of District Councils 26 and 28 in the Zululand District. It falls under the Ulundi Local Municipality, under the Ximba and Obuka Traditional Councils and iNkosi’s Ximba and Biyela. This road serves the Mpongose, Ximba, Biyela and Ntambanana communities. It provides access to the Nqunqa Primary School, Nhlungwane High School, Zwelonke High School, Dumanikahle High School and Nkosithani High School. It also provides access to the Ntamabanana Clinic, Luwamba Hospital, Bhukanana pension paypoint, Bhukanana Post Office, Bhukanana Police Station and the Prince Mangosuthu Airport.
P700 is an 8.5-metre-wide, 2 lane main road that is a tourist route through historical and cultural sites and provides access to potential agricultural developments in the area. The project entails upgrading 96 kilometres of gravel road to a blacktop surface as well as the construction of 21 major and 18 minor structures at an estimated total budget of R1.528 billion.
The construction commenced in April 2003 and as at the end of the 2017/2018 financial year R1.354 billion had been spent on the construction of 82 kilometres and 25 major structures on P700. For the 2018/2019 financial year, 9.5 kilometres is being constructed at an estimated budget of R140 million. Construction will continue over the next financial year at estimated budget of R20 million. The upgrade of Main Road P700 will create an estimated total of 5631 job opportunities over the full construction period.
