The final 14 km to Howick incorporates the steeply graded Town Hill, which has 3 lanes with paved shoulders in each direction.

Plaza. From the Tugela Toll Plaza to the Wilge Toll Plaza (Villiers) the road is a four-lane single carriageway with shoulders of varying width. The section between the Tugela Toll Plaza and Warden has at-grade intersections and access roads with reduced speed limits signposted. The remainder of the road between Villiers and Heidelberg is a four-lane dual carriageway with paved shoulders.

Abbotsdale and Voortrekker Road Interchange

Due to construction work the speed limit throughout the area has been lowered.

Dual Carriageway North of Darling Road Interchange has been closed and Traffic on the South Bound carriageway has been diverted onto the North Bound carriageway at a point halfway between the Voortrekker and Darling road interchanges. Two way traffic is currently accommodated on the North Bound carriageway over the full 4km extent of the project.

All off ramps remain functional but slightly hidden/obscured and the public are therefore requested to drive slowly and be alert to the directional signage provided at the off ramps. Motorists are to proceed with caution and be aware of traffic approaching from the North, driving toward Cape Town, who tend to overlook the right hand diversion to Cape Town (N7 continuation)

Road and Bridge construction activities are taking place extensively in the interchange and are also consistent between the 4km construction limits.

No stop/Go control points are in operation but traffic must be aware of slow moving heavy vehicles entering and exiting the roadway.

Due to the urban environment many pedestrians can be expected to be crossing the road for which extra caution is necessary.

Citrusdal to Cederberg T-Junction:

Construction works on this section is nearing completion however speed limits throughout the area are still lowered. No permanent stop/go closures will be operational though motorists may encounter short temporary stop/go with a waiting time of 5 – 10 minutes. Some shoulder closures will also be operational.

The construction site will be closed as from and including 18 December 2015 to 11 January 2016. During this time, there will be no closures.

Cederberg T-Junction to Kransvleikloof:

Construction work is in progress between Cederberg T-Junction and the Paleisheuwel Junction. The speed limit throughout the area has been lowered.

Motorists will encounter one day closure with a waiting period on average of 10 – 20minutes – up to 17 December 2015.

Blasting is minimal, but still on-going. The road will be closed as required in order for safe blasting to take place. Prior notice will however be given via road signs and local radio stations. Blasting is limited to two days a week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays) between 15:00 and 16:00.

3. Construction of the Botshabelo Interchange (km 47.65) is in progress. Traffic along the N8 and main road from Botshabelo is not yet diverted. However, an additional access from the N8 to Botshabelo town has been provided, with adequate signage.

St Barnabas

The projest commenced in August 2012 and is expected to be completed in December 2015. The R61 through St Barnabas is currently under construction and hence closed for traffic over a distance of approximately 2km. Traffic is accommodated via a gravel bypass with a speed limit of 40km/hr.

Beware of traffic calming measures in the form of shallow trenches. Travellers should add approximate 15minutes to their travel time.

Construction of the Tombo dual carriageway and modal interchange commenced in October 2011 and it is expected to be completed in May 2015.

Ngqeleni Interchange to Libode East

Construction of bridges, intersection widening and the Libode Interchange commenced in April 2014. It is a 28 month contract and it is expected to be completed in July 2016. Currently there is no traffic delays due to this project. Stop/ Go in place. Expect traffic diversion through Libode town.
